Google Search Labs Introduces New AI Feature for Summarizing Search Results
On May 10, 2023, Google unveiled a new feature in Google Search that harnesses artificial intelligence (AI) to provide users with concise summaries of relevant information based on their queries. This feature is known as "Search Generative Experience" (SGE).
SGE utilizes a Large Language Model (LLM) to comprehend user queries and generate summaries from various web sources. These summaries are presented in an easily readable and understandable format, offering diverse perspectives on the searched topic.
To use SGE, users need to activate the feature in Search Labs.
Once activated, users can input questions into the Google search box. If the question qualifies for SGE, Google will display a summary at the top of the search results.
Here are some examples of questions that can be answered by SGE:
"How does the brain work?"
"what is anime?"
"What is the meaning of life?"
Here are the results for the example "How does the brain work?":
While SGE is still in the development stage, Google hopes that this feature will assist users in finding information more quickly and easily. The user can request a follow-up by pressing "converse."
Advantages of SGE
SGE offers several advantages compared to traditional search features. Some of these include:
1. More Accurate and Comprehensive Summaries
SGE utilizes LLM to understand user queries and generate summaries from various web sources. This ensures that the provided summaries are accurate and comprehensive.
2. Readable and Understandable Summaries
SGE presents information in a format that is easy to read and understand, helping users grasp the provided information quickly and easily.
3. Access to Various Perspectives
SGE can encompass diverse perspectives on the searched topic, allowing users to understand the subject more thoroughly.
Limitations of SGE
While SGE is still in the development phase, it has some limitations, including:
1. Incomplete Summaries
SGE may struggle to produce complete summaries for complex questions.
2. Biased Summaries
SGE may generate biased summaries based on the data it was trained on.
3. Inaccurate Summaries
SGE may produce inaccurate summaries if the training data used is not accurate.
Google is actively working to address these limitations as they continue to develop SGE.
