4 Users of Sun Breathing in Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba)
Sun Breathing is a legendary breathing technique in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. Due to its difficulty, only a few demon slayers have been able to master it.
Furthermore, other breathing techniques such as Flame Breathing, Wind Breathing, Mist Breathing, Water Breathing, and Stone Breathing are all derived from the Sun Breathing technique itself.
In the world of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, there are only a handful of known users of this powerful breathing technique.
One of them is the main character of the story, Kamado Tanjiro. So, who are the confirmed users of the Sun Breathing technique? Here's the list!
1. Yoriichi Tsugikuni
Yoriichi Tsugikuni is not only the creator of Sun Breathing but also the strongest demon slayer in the history of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. With his 13th Sun Breathing technique, which he developed, he came close to killing Muzan. Unfortunately, despite his contributions in teaching breathing techniques to demon slayers, he seems to have been forgotten. The cause of this is explained in chapter 187, where it is revealed that Yoriichi's brother turned into a demon, and Yoriichi failed to kill Muzan while letting Tamayo escape, resulting in his expulsion from the demon extermination corps.
2. Sumiyoshi
Sumiyoshi is Tanjiro's ancestor who had a connection with Yoriichi Tsugikuni. Yoriichi even entrusted his earrings to Sumiyoshi. In chapter 192, it is revealed that Sumiyoshi witnessed Yoriichi's Sun Breathing techniques in the past and remembered every single detail of his movements. The chapter explains that the Sun Breathing later revealed itself to be a Kagura dance/Hinokami Kagura, resembling a Shinto ritual dance, as Yoriichi's sword swings made him appear more like a spirit than a human. In the same chapter, it is shown that Sumiyoshi made a promise to Yoriichi to pass on the Sun Breathing and his unique earrings to his descendants. With Hinokami Kagura and Yoriichi's earrings now in Tanjiro's possession, it seems that Sumiyoshi's promise has indeed been fulfilled.
3. Tanjuro Kamado
Tanjuro Kamado is Tanjiro's father who passed away from an illness before the events of the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba series. However, based on flashbacks, it is evident that Tanjuro was a formidable warrior throughout his life. Despite his physical ailments, he was able to perform the Hinokami Kagura dance continuously from dusk till dawn. In a flashback from chapter 151, Tanjuro realized the threat posed by a large bear endangering his family. With an axe in hand, Tanjuro swiftly and easily decapitated the bear.
4. Tanjiro Kamado
Tanjiro Kamado is the character who inherited Hinokami Kagura from his father, Tanjuro. Throughout Tanjiro's journey, he feels that he has never reached the level of Yoriichi Tsugikuni's strength. Nonetheless, he plays a crucial role in Muzan's ultimate defeat. After viewing Sumiyoshi's memories, Tanjiro realizes that the 13 Sun Breathing techniques involve repeatedly performing all 12 techniques in a cycle, starting from technique 1 and ending with technique 12, before repeating the sequence again. Interestingly, there are hints regarding this rotation in the names of the Hinokami Kagura techniques. Both the first technique (Dance/Waltz) and the twelfth technique (Flame Dance/Flame Waltz) are spelled "Enbu" in Japanese, although the spellings are slightly different.
These are the four confirmed users of Sun Breathing in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.
