DeepMind's Gemini Chatbot Aims to Rival ChatGPT

DeepMind, the Google-owned research lab, is developing a new chatbot called Gemini that it claims will rival or even surpass OpenAI's ChatGPT. Gemini draws inspiration from AlphaGo, DeepMind's groundbreaking AI system that achieved a historic victory against a professional human player in the game of Go.

According to DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, Gemini will have the ability to plan or solve problems as well as analyze text. "At a high level you can think of Gemini as combining some of the strengths of AlphaGo-type systems with the amazing language capabilities of the large models," Hassabis said. "We also have some new innovations that are going to be pretty interesting."

One of the key innovations that Gemini will use is reinforcement learning. Reinforcement learning involves "rewarding" an AI system for certain behaviors and/or punishing undesired ones, with the goal of "teaching" the system which behaviors to exhibit in a given situation. This approach has already been shown to be effective in training language models, and DeepMind believes that it can be used to further improve Gemini's performance.

Gemini is not DeepMind's first foray into language models. Last year the company introduced Sparrow, a chatbot that the lab claimed was less likely than other language models to give "unsafe" or "inappropriate" answers to questions. However, Gemini is DeepMind's most ambitious work in the space so far, and it has the potential to be a major player in the generative AI market.

The market for generative AI is expected to grow significantly in the coming years, and Gemini could be well-positioned to capitalize on this growth. If successful, Gemini could help DeepMind to further solidify its position as a leader in the field of artificial intelligence.

Here are some additional details about Gemini:

  • It is being developed using a technique called reinforcement learning, which has been shown to be effective in training language models.
  • It is expected to have the ability to plan or solve problems as well as analyze text.
